Linda Powell: Small Apollo Butterfly The butterfly with its paper-thin wings and fragile body appears to be too delicate to survive in all but the mildest of climates. Yet, the amazing creature makes his home in both the warmest rain forests of South America and the snow-covered mountains near the poles. One of the most beautiful of the amazing circumpolar butterflies is the Small Apollo. When the ice and snow of his northern home give way to lovely alpine flowers like the Rosebay, the Small Apollo becomes a familiar visitor to the garden. His thin, parchment-like wings of white are attractively marked in red and black, making the Small Apollo one of Alaska's most distinctive butterflies. The poet Alexander Pope must have been thinking of the delicate Small Apollo when he wrote "... Transparent forms, too fine for mortal sight, Their fluid bodies half dissolv'd in light." Yet, for all his frail, translucent beauty, the Small Apollo survives admirably in his harsh homeland. However, this most beautiful of Alaska's butterflies is also well known in the European Alps and as far south in America as the high mountain peaks of Mexico. Indeed, whether he is in his Alaskan homeland or dazzling skiers in the Alps, the Small Apollo is one of the best-loved butterflies of the alpine meadow.
