Michael Warren: Black Ducks Aside from color differences in their bills and legs, both sexes of black ducks appear nearly identical. Adult hens have olive-green bills and crimson legs, while mature drakes are endowed with bright yellow bills and coral-colored legs. Both sexes have blackish-brown plumage, and white underwings which flash in graphic contrast to their dark bodies when the birds are in flight. Black ducks are close relatives of mallards. The two species frequently interbreed and produce hybrid waterfowl with interesting variations in plumage. For example, some hybrid "black ducks" display only touches of green on the sides of their heads and hints of white along their blue speculums. Others appear more "mallard-like" having green heads and dark bodies but lacking the mallards' white neck-rings. Artwork Copyright © 1985 Unicover Corporation.
