Erik Nitsche: Checkered Beetle The Checkered Beetle larvae wait atop flat clusters of blossoms until they can attach themselves to a hairy insect and be carried away. If these insects happen not to be bees, the beetle's fate is death, for it can only perish without the foods provided by the bees. If good fortune is with the beetle though, he finds an inexhaustible food supply of bee larvae, and grows steadily until time to leave the bee nest. After reaching this stage of maturity, the beetle returns to other flowering plants to continue the pollination process. Artwork Copyright © 1984 Unicover Corporation.
