In the 18th century, vivid markings earned this attractive butterfly the name "admirable," a moniker from which its modern name was derived. Not only colorful, but hardy as well, Admiral Butterflies have been seen as far north as the Arctic Circle and as high as 6,000 feet. Territorial and self-sufficient, they often remain in the same place for weeks. Each constructs its own shelter by spinning the leaves of stinging nettle.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Great Britain Red Admiral Butterfly block of four stamp issue of May 13, 1981.
