In Great Britain, the love of the garden is a great leveler of people. Both humble cottages and magnificent palaces spread their gardens before them like a welcome mat and proudly share their beauty with every passerby. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, elaborate gardens were primarily created for the rich and famous ... and admired only from afar by those less fortunate. However, with the coming of the nineteenth century and an increase in the wealth of the common man, the beauty of the garden became something that many people could enjoy, both as owner and admirer. New and exciting plants for display in the small garden gained a new market among those who wished to enjoy the beauty of the garden ... but lacked the space and funds to devloped a lavish landscape garden. Still, the nineteenth century had its magnificent gardens that are maintained to this day as national showpieces. One such garden is Biddulph Grange which is depicted in this artwork. This garden gives evidence of a foreign influence in British gardens. The garden has the look of an Egyptian court, complete with stone sphinxes guarding a stone entrance beneath a pyramind of clipped Yew. The gateway conceals an attractive half-timbered cottage. This beautiful Victorian garden was created between 1849 and 1864 by James Bateman and Edward Cooke. Today, it is owned by an orthopedic hospital and is open only on rare occasions to the public.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Great Britain 20-1/2P Biddulph Grange stamp issued August 24, 1983.
