Michael Warren: Yellow-crowned Night Heron
Enjoying the tranquil quiet of swamps or river backwaters by day, the Yellow-crowned Night Heron is an active night wader. Unlike other herons, the Yellow-crown rarely hunts live fish, preferring instead to dine on shellfish and small amphibians. The Yellow-crowned Night Heron's mismatched stocky body and long stilt-like legs contrast with the stately, elegant appearance of other members of the heron family. Predominantly gray up to its slender neck, the Yellow-crown's distinct black and white face is capped by a yellow-plumed pate. The silent and secretive Yellow-crown stands rigidly erect as it watches over its bulky stick nest which is usually built in densely forested areas along the water's edge. Responsibility for guarding the two to four blue-green eggs is shared by both parents. Usually nesting in small colonies, the Yellow-crowned Night Heron may utter a series of high-pitched "quacks" when intruders approach. Little is known about the white-streaked young herons, due to the difficulty in reaching the nesting areas. Yellow-crowns sometimes nest in colonies with the more abundant Black-crowned Herons. Also called the Fish Crane or Indian Hen, the Yellow-crowned Night Heron can be found in small colonies or single mating pairs from southern Ohio, especially along the Ohio River Valley, to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean coasts.
