The Great Egret with its brilliant white plumage, long legs and magnificent yellow bill, is one of America's most beautiful waterfowl, inhabiting marshes, lakes, rivers, swamps and mudflats. This spectacular bird is distinguished from most other white herons by its large size. Although its primary food is fish, it feeds on snakes, frogs and insects as well. The Great Egret spends much of its time wading in the shallows, and stands motionless in the water stalking prey. When a fish ventures too close, the bird will use its powerful beak to grasp the fish and swallow it whole. Highly gregarious, the egret feeds and nests in large colonies with other birds such as the white ibis. The Great Egret's nest is made of reeds and sticks and is located over or near water, often high in the trees. In breeding season, the Great Egret displays long plumes that trail from its back, extending beyond its tail. These feathers were in demand by manufacturers of ladies hats in the early 20th century, and contributed significantly to the decline of this species. Bird populations eventually recovered and the Great Egret expanded in some parts of its range. Today pollution and habitat loss contribute to this bird's decline worldwide.
