With all the bright color of turquoise jewelry, the Mountain Bluebird is a dazzling sight as he flies about his highland home. This bird is a well-known favorite throughout the Rocky Mountains. There, just below the timberline at ten to twelve thousand feet, the bright bird makes his nest amid groves of aspen, mountain meadows and thick, coniferous forests. Often, the Mountain Bluebird will choose a cavity for a nesting site, much like his cousin the Eastern Bluebird. A favorite nesting location is a cliff hollow. But, the cheerful birds are also frequent residents of Wyoming's ranches where they will often raise their young around barns or other ranch buildings. Throughout most of the year, the Mountain Bluebird lives on the insects of his alpine home. Darting from boulder to boulder and limb to limb, he catches many unsuspecting insects on the wing. Occasionally, he hovers above ground for a surprise attack on a beetle, caterpillar or cricket he spies below. Since he lives so high in the mountains and has been known to venture as far north as Alaska, the azure-hued bird has been nicknamed the Arctic Bluebird.

This artwork was originally published on a Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Birds of America Collection. Each Cover featured a State Wildlife Conservation Stamp designed by Michael Warren, issued by the National Audubon Society and postmarked on the First Day of Issue of each stamp which was also the anniversary of statehood for each state.
