With a push of its strong wren-shaped body, the Dipper fearlessly dives and disappears beneath the surface of the fast-flowing water. One of the few true inhabitants of the water, the Dipper will remain submerged for as long as thirty seconds while searching for food. They will also plunge into the water at the approach of danger. Here their agility and thick, waterproofed plumage help protect them from enemies. In England, Dippers are most often spotted in upland streams and rivers, their brilliant white breasts presenting a dazzling contrast against dark water and rocks. These unique birds are also called the Water Ouzel and sometimes referrd to as the "water chatterer" because their alternating soft and loud twitterings sound like the splashing of a stream. This hardy little bird can actually move about while under water by skillfully rowing themselves about in the current. And, it has been discovered, the Dipper also walks under water by using its long, strong legs and toes to pick a path across the pebbled streambed. When Dippers mate in the Spring, a pair will select a nest site together, usually beside fast-flowing deep water. The female lays from four to six eggs and spends sixteen days incubating them. The babies, like their parents, prefer the water to the air. The Dipper provides fascinating viewing for anyone fortunate enough to catch sight of its fast-moving water antics.
