Mark Schuler: Dennis Chavez Although Dennis Chavez was only thirteen in 1901, he left school and devoted his time to the local elections of his hometown of Los Chavez, New Mexico. By 1916 his work had become an invaluable asset for Senator Andrieus Jones, and Chavez became his full-time Spanish interpreter. Chavez accompanied Jones to Washington where the Senator rewarded him with a congressional clerkship. After graduating from Georgetown University with a law degree, Chavez returned to Albuquerque to practice law. But he found that his real talents lay in the political realm where he could help New Mexico's hispanic and Indian groups through the legislature. In 1931, Chavez captured a seat in the United States House of Representatives. He held this seat for two terms until he was asked to serve out the term of one of the United States Senators from New Mexico. He served his state in this capacity, being consistently reelected, from 1936 to 1958. While in the Senate, Chavez continued his early work for disadvantaged minority groups. In fact, his support was so effective, in particular for Puerto Rico, that he became known as "Puerto Rico's senator," even though that protectorate can have no senator. Chavez, a New Dealer, was also an early supporter of the federal Fair Employment Act and reciprocal trade agreements with Latin America.
