The life and accomplishments of Roger Sherman truly indicate that he was a "self-made man." Born in humble circumstances, Sherman received no formal education. Yet, an insatiable thirst for learning forced young Sherman into a strict habit of personal study that led him to read widely in theology, history, mathematics, and particularly law and politics. As a result, he gained remarkable expertise in all these areas. By 1774, Sherman had launched into an outstanding political career in which he labored unceasingly to secure complete freedom and independence for the American colonies. Although he belonged to a conservative wing of the Revolutionary party, he was one of the first to deny the supremacy of the British Parliament. In fact, according to the memoirs of John Adams, Sherman "thought the reverse of the declaratory act was true, namely, that the Parliament of Great Britain had authority to make laws for America in no case whatever. Sherman became so active in the fight for America's freedom that he is the only person in history to have signed all four great documents of the Revolution: the Association of 1774, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution.
