One of Scotland's greatest wildlife spectacles takes place at Montrose Basin -- some 2,000 acres of tidal mud flats and fringing wetland habitat located on the southeast coast. Seeking safe roosting grounds, hordes of Pink-footed Geese gather at this locale throughout the winter, attracted by the rich feeding provided by the cereals and grasslands situated betwen the towns of Dundee and Aberdeen. Up to 40,000 geese have been counted leaving the Basin on October and November morning flights. Although they are known to feed in huge flocks that can number in the thousands, Pink-footed Geese are considered to be among the wariest of waterfowl, intentionally avoiding hedges and other natural shelter where predators may be hiding. Nomadic creatures, the birds that winter in Great Britain are known to nest in Iceland and East Greenland. Though these geese typically breed in loose colonies on secluded rock outcroppings and cliffs, those that nest in Thjorsarver -- an oasis of vegetation in Iceland's central highlands -- lay their eggs in low tundra or moraines. Breeding fowl are afforded this opportunity because predators, such as the arctic fox, are not prevalent in Thjorsarver. By the first week of September, the first geese migrate to Britain. Their winter stay lasts until the end of April, with a few stragglers remaining until mid May.
