Ever since proud patriots declared their independence from the British Crown, Americans have had to fight to remain free. Over the course of America's history when the call to defend freedom was raised -- even in foreign countries -- America's men and women have answered that call. Each time America's sons and daughters have gone into battle to fight for justice and freedom, the veterans who have come home have been honored as some of our society's most respected citizens. However, when the veterans of the Vietnam War returned home, many were not treated with the respect they deserved. For these brave men and women fought a war whose purpose was not fully understood. In fact, it was not until 1982 that a national Vietnam Veterans Memorial was erected in memory of the men and women who served ... and died ... in the Vietnam War. The Memorial is a V-shaped wall of black granite which rests in a grassy slope between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial in our Nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Inscribed with the 57,939 names of the missing and dead Americans who fought the costly War, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a shrine which captures America's pride in her veterans.
