One mark of a sensational talent in figure skating is the ability to make the skill look easy and effortless. Of course, anyone who has been on the ice knows better. The Olympic figure skater is indeed master of a unique athletic form, the ability to gracefully dance and execute precisely planned movements on ice to the rhythm of music. It was in 1908 at the London Games that figure skating first joined the Olympics. Sweden dominated the men's event, while Madge Syers of Great Britain took top honors for the women. The events then were very much like those featured today -- singles for men and women, pairs competitions and a third event much like the modern free style. This 1908 competition was the start of the grand competition it has become. Today, figure skating is generally judged 60 percent on prescribed classical form and 40 percent on free skating style. In 1948, America won its first gold medal in figure skating and since that time Americans have proudly entered champion after champion. No American can ever forget Peggy Fleming who in 1968 enchanted the world with her stellar performance. And, more recent American Olympic skaters like Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton and others have dazzled spectators with their performances on ice, skating their way to victory. At the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France, figure skaters from all around the world took to the ice with their hopes and hearts exposed.
