Erik Nitsche: End of U.N. Trusteeship over Marshall
Artist: Erik Nitsche
On April 2,1947, the United Nations Security Council formally conferred trusteeship status upon the Pacific Islands, and the newly renamed Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands fell under the administration of the United States. In 1978, the people of the Marshall Islands separated from the other entities of the Trust Territory, adopted a constitution and formed a republic in anticipation of indpendence. The United States dissolved the trusteeship in 1986 , and entered into a compact of Free Association with the now sovereign Republic of the Marshall Islands. On September 17, 1991, the Republic was admitted to the United Nations, and on September 21, President Amata Kabua addressed the U.N. General Assembly for the first time.
