The most precious of all natural resources is water. It is a necessary element of life for all creatures. Indeed, man can survive for weeks without the nourishment of food, but will perish within a few days if denied water. Aside from sustaining all life, water is a precious commodity for modern civilization. Industry, trade, and power plants are often the greatest consumers of water in modern society. Because water is an essential for all our lives, the purity and conservation of fresh water is a global concern. Many countries have executed water treatment programs to ensure that their water supply is fresh and free of toxins. However, there is still room for improvement. Toxic wastes are still dumped into many rivers and stream, and air pollutants contaminate lakes and ponds. The deterioration of these vital surface waters not only threatens society's fresh water supply, but also endangers the survival of many species of wildlife and aquatic animals.
