The city of Trenton, New Jersey is perhaps best remembered as the area where George Washington made his famed crossing of the Delaware River. However, today Trenton is an important manufacturing center and home of the state's Capitol Building. New Jersey's massive Capitol Building was constructed in 1790, measuring a mere 50 feet by 150 feet, with modest chambers for the Assembly and the Council in bays at either end. In 1795, offices for the Secretary of State were added. A major resructuring was undertaken in 1845 when the building's distinctive rotunda and porticoes were added. In 1889 an elegant entrance porch supported by pillars of polished granite and surmounted by the New Jersey Coat of Arms was constructed. Two years later, a meeting chamber for the 80-member Assembly was completed. The chamber exterior is constructed of stone, iron and brick, while the interior is finished in elegant Trenton tile, quartered oak and Italian marble. In 1903, a second special chamber was built to house the state's 40 Senators. Life-like murals bedeck its walls with noble figures of "Liberty and Prosperity," the state's motto, great Revolutionary War events, and major New Jersey industrial activities. The building is itself a salute to the state's history and livelihood.
