Mark Schuler: Nathaniel Greene
In the growing conflict between England and its American colonies, there was never any question as to where Nathanael Greene's sympathies lay. He was always on the side of the Colonies, and when, in 1775, his native Rhode Island raised three regiments to join the fight against England, he was named commander with the rank of Brigadier General. At once he marched his troops to Cambridge, Massachussetts, to take part in the siege of Boston under Gneral George Washington. General Washington began to rely on Greene more and more for advice and repeatedly sent him on important, strategic missions. Once, when Washington had to be away from the army, he designated Greene to act as Commander in Chief in his place, and on several occasions General Washingtion let it be known to all that should he be killed or captured, Nathanael Greene would be his best successor. Greene was especially known for his brilliant war-time strategy, which was characterized by the enemy as "dazzling shiftiness." His main objectives would consist of dividing the enemy, eluding him, and tiring him out. The brave leadership of this great patriot was responsible for the winning of many important battles, and to a large extent, even the Revolutionary War itself. After the war was won, Nathanael Greene spent his last few years of his life on his plantation near Savannah.
