Clive Abbott
British 1933 -

Educated at Wimbledon Art School, Clive Abbott served in the British army, then worked as an advertising art director. In 1965, he won a British Post Office design competition for the Post Office Tower stamp -- the first English stamp to carry the name of the artist and printer. Three years later Abbott began to freelance full-time, concentrating on graphic design and illustration. Abbott has worked for nearly 60 postal administrations, producing many commemorative, definitive and omnibus issues. "Even within the limitations of postage stamp design," Abbott says, "I do not specialize in any particular subject or restrict myself to any illustrative style, I will tackle almost anything and the more variety the better." Abbott is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, as well as a member of the Royal Society of Arts, the Society of Typographic Designers, the Wynkyn de Worde Society (for designers, publishers and printers) and the Cartoonists' Club of Great Britain.
