Paul and Chris Calle
American

Paul Calle (1928- ) and son Chris Calle (1961- ) are noted artists famous for their stamp designs, paintings which chronicle history and portraits, often working together. They have garnered international attention through museum exhibitions and stamps. Paul's artistic journey started when he completed high school at the age of 15, began a free-lance illustration career and graduated from Brooklyn's Pratt Institute when he was 19. His drawings and oil paintings are notable for their incredible control and sensitivity, giving them the quality of fine etchings. One critic said about Calle, "Here is an artist whose career strongly reflects the dramatic era in which he lives and works." Chris graduated from the University of Michigan with honors in 1983. A free-lance illustrator, he is internationally renowned as a stamp designer. His works can be found in many major corporate and private collections. Selected as an official NASA artist to document the Space Shuttle program, Calle continues to find the theme of space travel and exploration a fascinating and exciting subject for his art. Calle's paintings reflect a strong sense of design and a keen interest in the personalities and imagery of historical events. Of note, Paul designed the 1969 U.S. First Man on the Moon stamp. Chris designed the 1989 U.S. Moon Landing 20th Anniversary of the First Moon Landing stamp. And, Paul and Chris jointly designed the 1994 U.S. 25th Anniversary of the First Moon Landing stamps --- an unparalleled design event.
