| Stanley Paine British 1934 - British artist, Stanley Paine, is
one of the 20th century's foremost painters of transportation subjects. He earned worldwide acclaim with his designs for the Royal Mail featuring British Motor Cars, a special issue of postage
stamps. He says, "As long as I can remember, I have always been interested in mechanical things, and in particular those from the past. All my childhood drawings were of cars, railway engines
and airplanes." For several years, Paine worked as a freelance illustrator for such prestigious clients as The Reader's Digest Association, Encyclopedia Britannica International, Heinemanns,
Hutchinsons, Air Canada and the United Kingdom Post Office. Paine says, "It might be said that my work betrays a Jekyll and Hyde character, but I do not agree. When designing my paintings
and illustrations, my intention is to extract and perhaps slightly exaggerate the contrasts...My work is just as honest an expression I can manage of the things I most love to look at." |
